T-I-G-H-T.

Arts and Farts

We went and saw Raqib Shaw's show at the Met this weekend, and that shit blew my mind grapes.  If you are in the vicinity of NYC I would highly recommend going, as looking at pictures on the interweb really, really doesn't do this dude justice. Also, I'd recommend checking out his stuff last if you go, because it made Pollock and de Kooning very underwhelming afterwards.  And they also have this there:

2008?

Jim's Best of 2008. This one will be the worst, so good thing I posted last.

Best Movie:

Due to the fact that I live in the sticks, I haven't seen any of the movies that really wanted to see yet, so I'm betting it will either be Synecdoche, NY, because Charlie Kaufman makes me feel like a total idiot (which isn't hard, but I do enjoy). Or The Wrestler because I love cheesy underdog/comeback stories, probably because I was raised on Stallone gems like Rocky and First Blood. Or it could be Benjamin Button for the fact that David Fincher and Brad Pitt working together is always a really, really good thing. But as far as movies I actually watched.

WANTED:
I saw it at the movie theatre, and while it was nowhere near as good as Timur Nuruakhitovich Bekmambetov Russian movies (nightwatch, daywatch and the sure to be sick Twilight Watch) it was hilarious. The dude is a Russian director that tried to make a "boom-boom, sexy American movie", this dude's view of what America is, and what Americans like is depressing, true and super funny. Just imagining this dude screaming at the actors to "make sexy" makes seeing this movie worth it.

Honorable Mention: Wall-E

Best Album:

Parts and Labor, Recievers

I've always liked bands that try and make an "album" rather than a bunch of songs slapped together. For me this album is perfect, give it a listen.

Honorable Mention:
Titus Andronicus: The Airing of Grievances, The Hold Steady: Stay Positive,

Best Song:

Titus Andronicus: Titus Andronicus/No Future.

These two songs back each other. I love when a band can pull off different sounds on the same album and it not be retarded i.e: When bands that cannot d0 slow songs try anyway (usually the second to last song that you skip everytime). The first one is a great example of what "punk" should sound like in 2008 and the second song, is a great My Bloody Valentine shoegazey ripper that has one of the best build ups since Jawbreaker's Accident Prone, also it's 7 minutes long and I never get bored and he makes the phrase "welcome to the terror dome" sound poignant and deep and not a reference to a Mel Gibson movie. Two tracks later they also read my favorite passage from Albert Camus' "The Stranger" so I was a little biased.

Honorable Mention:
Girl Talk:Play Your Part (Pt. 1) Which was a pitch-perfect summer jam

Best Blog:

You Will Soon. Super funny and it's about shoes and talking shit, which are two of my favorite past times.

Honorable Mention
ctothejl.com, azizisbored.com, videogum.com, returnofthecaferacers.blogspot.com

Best Streetwear Trend:

This is a dumb category. What am I supposed to say Flannels and Raw Denim? As far as brands, I have to disqualify brands I work with because I have an unfair bias. It was Us Versus Them, hands down the best t-shirt collection.

Best T-Shirt:

The Award Tour: Limitless Possibilities, VLNY: Black Friday Thieves, VRS Astronaut and the one we did for Ritual Ink.

Best Drinking Spot:

Outdoors in the afternoon, I think I did this all of twice this year, and that's my New Year's Resolution, to skate more mini ramp while having beers in the sun. It's snowing and it's 29 degrees in my store currently, because I forgot to turn the heat on last night, so I just got misty even thinking about how nice that would be.

Honorable Mention: Damian's apt., Snug's back porch, Jesse's Stoop in Philly, Ryan's Roof.

Best Boner:

Motorcycles, straight up, makes everything slightly more fun. Picture me rolling on this thing come spring.

Best Anti-Boner:

Working weekends, this past year marked the fewest times I skateboarded, got drunk and slept since I started all those things. So fuck you 2008 for that, but due to the crippling economic depression that probably wont' be an issue in 2009. So my anti-boner for 2009 will be going out of business and getting a job at Best Buy.
Also, blogging, I seriously hate this thing, I'm too self-conscious for this, also I'm not very funny or interesting so that gets in the way. You are supposed to end on a high note when you are blogging it up right?

2008; Who Cares?!

Ryan's Best of 2008 List
I don't really get out much and I don't really pay attention to a lot of things, so this will suck. Also, I have a feeling I shouldn't be writing this hungover with the heat in my house busted. OH WELL:

Best Movie:

WALL-E-
Best story, incredibly beautiful, funny, honest, and heartwarming. If you didn't like WALL-E as a film, or a ridiculously cute (yes, CUTE) robot, you are a fucking asshole. It was deeper than 99 percent of the shit that came out this year, so you can't pull "It's for kids". Also, you're not tough, hardly anyone is. It's okay, come into Disney's warm embrace, and forget you're afraid to love an animated film about robo-love.

Honorable Mention: The Dark Knight, duh. And even though I haven't seen it, I'm absolutely positive Benjamin Button is incredible.

Best Album:

Dillinger Four -C I V I L W A R-
Of course I picked this. Why? IT'S AWESOME. I know that's not enough, so here's why; D4 hasn't put out a record in 6 years. 6 YEARS. I think NOFX puts out a 12-song at least 3 times a week. In the pop-punk to regular-rock-and-roll/pop-music scale, 6 years is like the fucking Beatles putting out a record every 75 years. Pop-punk is not supposed to work like this. That alone should be why it's the best record of the year, 'cause why'd they even bother? For the fans? I thought they didn't like their fans? I heard they do cocaine? I heard they're not playing The Fest this year? Fuck you. Also, to Doo-wop song is breaking barriers, cool-guy ones.

Honorable Mention: Hold Steady - Stay Positive, Girl Talk, Feed the Animals

Best Song:

Weezy - Got Money -

Isn't Lil Wayne Crazy?! He's so crazy. His face is plastered with sick ink, and he wears those tight little pants, but he raps! And he's really on Supra's dick, or vice-versa. I would be too. Why didn't Three-6 do anything this year, and hypothetically, if they did, why did it suck? Remember when they made horror-rap, and it was hard as fuck, and scary and stuff? That was before they wrote songs about how it's hard to make your money sitting back while some girl you know really well fucks it out of a stranger. But yeah, here's why Weezy runs best song:

"Its nothin to a big dog
And I'm a Great Dane
I wear eight chains
I mean so much ice
They yell skate Wayne!
She wanna fuck Weezy
But she wanna rape Wayne."

My goodness.

Honorable Mention: Usher and Jeezy "Love in this CLub" (or as Mike thought it was "I want to make love to this club"(?)). Tom Whalen signing "Born to Run", last night, on a guitar amp karaoke system, perfectly.

Best Blog:

Videogum.com -
So Funny, and smart, and well thought out, and not-so-well-thought-out, and topical, and strange, and all that. They are basically our style of humor, but better by A LOT. I find myself writing just like Gabe Delahaye now. The videos with him and Max Silvestri teaching you internets are one of my favorite things this year. Do yourself a favor, videogum.com.

Honorable Mention: YouWillSoon, theberrics.com, Boil the Ocean, Police Informer, 4Q Conditioning.

Best Streetwear Trend:

NOPE-
The only good shirt I saw was made by VLNY, and they're not even made yet. It's a picture of G.W.B. with all his shit in his arms, like lamps and clothes, and it says "KICK ROCKS". I love the phrase "Kick Rocks"! And it's like, fuck you, dude. I don't understand the famous person/funny thing design anymore, but I still like this shirt. Oh, Max Schaff/Vans with the fireproof ankle leather was the coolest thing by far.

Best T-Shirt:

The Viera Ride Shop Steelers shirt.

Best Drinking Spot:

Alone in the afternoon-
When my girlfriend is at work, sometimes I have some beers, every now and then, I have a few too many, and have to not be drunk when she gets home. Drinking by yourself is strange and fun, and oddly entertaining. If you fall asleep, you wake up, and you have no idea what's going on. Also, you get sad. That's what 2008 was like a lot of the time. Wow. I need a stable 9-5. I'm really not this sad!

Honorable Mention: ANYWHERE!

Best Boner:

Maggie Gyllenhaal in TDK-

I love her. Seriously. Look;

Best Anti-Boner:

Crippling Economic Depression:
This is going to be pretty boner-reducing for about 5 years. At least it will weed out the shitty streetwear brands (us?), maybe it will end this failed experiment altogether. I would love nothing more than for confetti-gangsters to have to go back to those shirts where Bugs Bunny is smoking weed, and it says "Blunts Bunny". Wait, I think that was a 10 Deep shirt. OOOOOOOOOOHHHHH!

That was stupid, Mike's was worse. Let's do this in '09! Nope, I'm no good at catchphrases.

Mike's Best of 2008 List

Here's my list of rad things of 2008. I don't really get out much and I don't really pay attention to a lot of things, so this might kind of suck:

Best Movie:

The Wrestler-

I just saw this movie last night. It snuck in at the last minute and oh man was it rad. I'm not one to get all talkie about movies, but this movie brings it. Mickey Rourke is totally amazing. And Darren Aronofsky finally decided to not do all that flashy stuff. No super fast cuts and eXXXtreme camera angles. Just a washed up wrestler trying to live.
Honorable Mention: The Batman Movie & Wanted (he curves the bullets!!!).

Best Album:

Saves The Day - Through Being Cool-

Can this album be any better? This came out nine years ago and I still think it's the best album this year. All about hatin on girlfriends and missin your bros. I love it. "could you tell me, the next that your choking? I'll rush right over to shove some dirt right down your throa-oa-oat." Yeah man. Fuck you.
Honorable Mention: What I've heard of The '59 Sound by The Gaslight Anthem

Best Song:

Titus Andronicus - Titus Andronicus-

Pretty much all I can ask for in a song. Super loud. Fast. Lots of yelling. And your like awesome, and then BAM! Hand-clap, gang vocal breakdown. My absolute favorite thing that can happen in a song, just like in angel is the centerfold. which is my favorite song ever. actually fuck it. that's my best song of the year. Oh yeah. And naming a song the same thing as your band is pretty funny.
Honorable Mention: Beyonce - Single Ladies (that shit is funky as hell)

Best Blog:

Kanye West's -

Until Kanye West stops bloggin, he will always have the best blog. I don't know if he really does all this bloggin himself, but it's funny anyways. Kanye West is the originator and innovator of the cool lookin toilet blog post. Want to know what a footstool designed by porshe looks like? Read Kayne's blog. Also, he rants are amazing. His new thing is writing it in the title of the blog post and not in the post itself, which i find hilarious. Here's one I found while looking at his blog for 30 seconds:
OK NOW THIS IS JUST STUPID! DUDE, DID YOU READ MY BOOK?? DO I SEEM LIKE A CHANTER??!! DO I EVEN HAVE TIME TO BE SITTING AROUND DOING THAT??? WHY YOU GOTTA MESS UP MY VACATION WITH STUPID SHIT??? YOU COULD'VE WAITED TWO MORE DAYS... HAAHAAAAA SIDEBAR: IF THERE'S ANY PARTIES ON NEW YEARS WITH MY NAME ON IT, DOOOON'T YOUUUU BELIEEEEEVE IT! I'M STAYING AT HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FIVE YEARS. WE DID 98 SHOWS THIS PAST YEAR!!! I JUST WANT TO CHILL, HOOP AND WATCH SOME MOVIES! ... AND AS ALWAYS... I'M TYPING IN ALL CAPS CAUSE I'M LAZY NOT ANGRY!!! OH, AND EXCLAMATION POINTS ARE FUN! HAHAHAAA!!! (IF I HAD BBM, I WOULD MAKE IT SAY I'M TYPING IN ALL CAPS CAUSE I'M LAZY!!!)

Best Streetwear Trend:

Not Giving A Shit About Streetwear-
Now I know people having been fucking this donkey for a while now, but it wasn't until 2008 that I really saw people not giving a flying fuck about streetwear. The sheer apathy that everyone felt in 2008 towards t-shirts with old rappers on them was amazing. "You make t-shirts? I don't fucking care." That was 2008 for me.
Honorable Mention: All-over prints.

Best T-Shirt:

Antilogy - Welcome To Hell - Tour T-Shirt-

Man is that shit tight.

Best Drinking Spot:

With your bros-

Who doesn't like having a couple pops with the bros? It could be 4 A.M. on a Sunday or it could be 3 P.M. on a Wednesday, nothing beats cutting a little loose with your bros. Have some laughs. Talk about stupid stuff. Maybe get a little serious. Who knows? Your with your bros drinkin beers. It's awesome.

Best Boner:

Barack Obama winning the election-

How rough has it been the last few years, huh? All sorts of wars and bad shit. It was such a bummer. And then on Nov. 4th Barack Obama won. I was like, holy shit. It happened. Boner.

Best Anti-Boner:

Crippling Economic Depression:

Holy fuck. Can we get any more recessed around here? Everyday, shit is gettin worse. We got to give people bail outs and crap. Where's my bailout? I'm a chai latte drinkin New Yorker. And now it's costing mad money to do everything. C'mon!

I'm over this. Happy New Year!

ka-BOOM! (everyone's dead forever)

I think this came out a couple of years ago. I remember not really thinking much of it, but looking at it now, I am shitting. It's extra scary because I don't know what she is saying. Maybe it's better that way.

Tour Diary No.2 !!! - UNIVERSAL RECORDS!!!

Because I liked Ryan video tour so much and because I'm a total biter, I decided to post the video of my office where I work. Like all my videos, it was taken when I didn't know my camera was on video mode.

The sum of all TOURS.

My mom asked me to do a video tour of my house (??), because she will never, ever, drive here, and i guess pictures are yesterday's news. Whatever, I am posting this because I think it is more of a look into my soul than my apartment. Maybe not. Call it outsider art. It would have been way cooler if my mom never asked, and I did it just to do it. You can't change the past. No regrets.
