Mike's Best of 2008 List

Here's my list of rad things of 2008. I don't really get out much and I don't really pay attention to a lot of things, so this might kind of suck:

Best Movie:

The Wrestler-

I just saw this movie last night. It snuck in at the last minute and oh man was it rad. I'm not one to get all talkie about movies, but this movie brings it. Mickey Rourke is totally amazing. And Darren Aronofsky finally decided to not do all that flashy stuff. No super fast cuts and eXXXtreme camera angles. Just a washed up wrestler trying to live.
Honorable Mention: The Batman Movie & Wanted (he curves the bullets!!!).

Best Album:

Saves The Day - Through Being Cool-

Can this album be any better? This came out nine years ago and I still think it's the best album this year. All about hatin on girlfriends and missin your bros. I love it. "could you tell me, the next that your choking? I'll rush right over to shove some dirt right down your throa-oa-oat." Yeah man. Fuck you.
Honorable Mention: What I've heard of The '59 Sound by The Gaslight Anthem

Best Song:

Titus Andronicus - Titus Andronicus-

Pretty much all I can ask for in a song. Super loud. Fast. Lots of yelling. And your like awesome, and then BAM! Hand-clap, gang vocal breakdown. My absolute favorite thing that can happen in a song, just like in angel is the centerfold. which is my favorite song ever. actually fuck it. that's my best song of the year. Oh yeah. And naming a song the same thing as your band is pretty funny.
Honorable Mention: Beyonce - Single Ladies (that shit is funky as hell)

Best Blog:

Kanye West's -

Until Kanye West stops bloggin, he will always have the best blog. I don't know if he really does all this bloggin himself, but it's funny anyways. Kanye West is the originator and innovator of the cool lookin toilet blog post. Want to know what a footstool designed by porshe looks like? Read Kayne's blog. Also, he rants are amazing. His new thing is writing it in the title of the blog post and not in the post itself, which i find hilarious. Here's one I found while looking at his blog for 30 seconds:
OK NOW THIS IS JUST STUPID! DUDE, DID YOU READ MY BOOK?? DO I SEEM LIKE A CHANTER??!! DO I EVEN HAVE TIME TO BE SITTING AROUND DOING THAT??? WHY YOU GOTTA MESS UP MY VACATION WITH STUPID SHIT??? YOU COULD'VE WAITED TWO MORE DAYS... HAAHAAAAA SIDEBAR: IF THERE'S ANY PARTIES ON NEW YEARS WITH MY NAME ON IT, DOOOON'T YOUUUU BELIEEEEEVE IT! I'M STAYING AT HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FIVE YEARS. WE DID 98 SHOWS THIS PAST YEAR!!! I JUST WANT TO CHILL, HOOP AND WATCH SOME MOVIES! ... AND AS ALWAYS... I'M TYPING IN ALL CAPS CAUSE I'M LAZY NOT ANGRY!!! OH, AND EXCLAMATION POINTS ARE FUN! HAHAHAAA!!! (IF I HAD BBM, I WOULD MAKE IT SAY I'M TYPING IN ALL CAPS CAUSE I'M LAZY!!!)

Best Streetwear Trend:

Not Giving A Shit About Streetwear-
Now I know people having been fucking this donkey for a while now, but it wasn't until 2008 that I really saw people not giving a flying fuck about streetwear. The sheer apathy that everyone felt in 2008 towards t-shirts with old rappers on them was amazing. "You make t-shirts? I don't fucking care." That was 2008 for me.
Honorable Mention: All-over prints.

Best T-Shirt:

Antilogy - Welcome To Hell - Tour T-Shirt-

Man is that shit tight.

Best Drinking Spot:

With your bros-

Who doesn't like having a couple pops with the bros? It could be 4 A.M. on a Sunday or it could be 3 P.M. on a Wednesday, nothing beats cutting a little loose with your bros. Have some laughs. Talk about stupid stuff. Maybe get a little serious. Who knows? Your with your bros drinkin beers. It's awesome.

Best Boner:

Barack Obama winning the election-

How rough has it been the last few years, huh? All sorts of wars and bad shit. It was such a bummer. And then on Nov. 4th Barack Obama won. I was like, holy shit. It happened. Boner.

Best Anti-Boner:

Crippling Economic Depression:

Holy fuck. Can we get any more recessed around here? Everyday, shit is gettin worse. We got to give people bail outs and crap. Where's my bailout? I'm a chai latte drinkin New Yorker. And now it's costing mad money to do everything. C'mon!

I'm over this. Happy New Year!

I think this came out a couple of years ago. I remember not really thinking much of it, but looking at it now, I am shitting. It's extra scary because I don't know what she is saying. Maybe it's better that way.

Tour Diary No.2 !!! - UNIVERSAL RECORDS!!!

Because I liked Ryan video tour so much and because I'm a total biter, I decided to post the video of my office where I work. Like all my videos, it was taken when I didn't know my camera was on video mode.

The sum of all TOURS.

My mom asked me to do a video tour of my house (??), because she will never, ever, drive here, and i guess pictures are yesterday's news. Whatever, I am posting this because I think it is more of a look into my soul than my apartment. Maybe not. Call it outsider art. It would have been way cooler if my mom never asked, and I did it just to do it. You can't change the past. No regrets.

Ideas are totally our business!

Well over a year ago, we did a Dillinger Four inspired shirt. It was so heavy. Jim Printed them a crazy way of course, and then we hand tie-died them. We only used red, yellow, and blue on black. Get it? We used a dark shirt, so you would see the dye in the text only. It was seriously pretty genius. We didn't read the dying instructions properly, of course, so the dye all but seeped out in the first wash. What were left with were like 40 black shirts that looked like someone spilled a glass of red wine on theyselves. Fuck it, they were still tight. I think I will be really obsessed with those forever.

Making Iron Man

The Dude took a bunch of pictures during the making of the second best comic book movie ever... right behind Rise of the Silver Surfer. They're pretty good photos, mad black and white fisheyes, just like he's shooting for Transworld in 1992.

Prince isn't gay?

I know Prince isn't gay, total jk there. But, the dude isn't so into gay people because he's a Jehovah's Witness:
“God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’ ”

Uncool, Prince. Very uncool. How about you stop judging, and go back to writing rad songs about fucking people, Prince? Otherwise, I'll start listening to the time.

Welcome To Awesome-Town

When we came up with the idea for the Welcome To Hell Collection, we were basing it on John McCain winning. I couldn't be more pleased that the collection loses a little of it's punch in favor of a president-elect that I actually believe in and the hope that our country will change.

... To get back up to the shining world from there
My guide and I went into that hidden tunnel;

And following its path, we took no care
To rest, but climbed: he first, then I — so far,
Through a round aperture I saw appear

Some of the beautiful things that Heaven bears,

When we came forth, and once more saw the stars

Russell Brand Leaves BBC Radio

B-U-M-M-E-R.

While Jim and I make shirts all day, we watch Gavin & Stacey, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Kitchen Nightmares, and listen to Russell Brand Radio. There is so much bullshit out there, I always get psyched for a new show of his. This is partly because Noel Gallagher is always on it, and mostly because it makes me laugh the way you laughed at cartoons when you were seven. Stinky-stinky.

You Can't Make This Up - Missed Connections

It's (Not) All Over Now, Baby Blue - w4m - 23 (New Paltz)

You're just kidding yourself if you say "it ain't me, babe" because without you it's so hard to get on.

I'm asking Bob Dylan and Neil Young to show up outside your balcony and sing you a telegram asking for you to be mine again! I'm summoning Jerry Garcia from the dead with seances and whispered pleas because I'm sure he'd tell you to shut up and kiss me already.

I want to drink one more (one more one more one more) cups of coffee with you before I go anywhere. I want to read with you every night and murmur striking passages aloud to you when I can't contain my laughter or delight or my love for literature or for you. I want to write my masterpiece with you by my side. I want you to be a main character in my life story. I want to cast you as my lover and my best friend in the movie adaptation of my life.

Like a spider crawls into her web in the corner, I want to crawl into your bed.

You are my home.

Please let me back inside.

See you there sucker

Me & Ryan's Thoughts on C I V I L WA R

actionORalgebra: did you check that shit out yet?
mikemnp: i did.
actionORalgebra: are you down
mikemnp: i mean. it might be how i feel about all D4 albums i hear. kind of like, nothing special. a little too wierd in spots, i think i gotta listen to it more. i always get down with thier albums like fith time through.
actionORalgebra: i feel the same way. I thought this one is special because it is flat out crazy in spots
actionORalgebra: the first time I heard situationist comedy, i didnt give a shit
actionORalgebra: it wasnt midwestern songs
mikemnp: definetely. which kind of sucks. i feel like they've been on a very slow decline. like, my love of their albums is in the exact order they came out. so, i hope i give this a few more listens, finda a lot of that subtle shit they do that i love
actionORalgebraa: see, i got into them hard around versus god, and went backwards in the weeks after, so Im all screwed up. I think it goues mid. songs, sit. comedy. this one, genius, and then versus god, cause in completely over that one aside from a couple songs
actionORalgebra: but im still actually on the fence about this one, ill report back in a couple weeks
actionORalgebra: i think its awesome, but i dont actually know yet. I think they could have recorded themselves farting inot a barrel, and i'd be pumped they released something
mikemnp: haha. true. the thing is, they release new music so rarely, that everytime, it's such a huge jump. so, it's always very jarring. they're not like other bands where they release an album even close to every year, so, so much shit changes with them and even with music in general that it's wierd to hear. we're all used to listening to the jams they put out in 1997-2003. that was a long fucking time ago.
actionORalgebra: yeah no shit, i feel like so many bands put out a record almost every year or so, so nobody cares if they switch their sound up, cause its like "well, maybe they'll go back next year."
actionORalgebra: when d4 puts out a record, it like "holy shit, this might have to be their opus"
actionORalgebra: "I may never hear another thing from them"
actionORalgebra: but then I think of NOFX, and their endless stream of the same, so whatevs
mikemnp: haha. exactly true! and they honestly do change they're sound up a ton, which is awesome for a band to do. this album's whole tempo is WAAAY slower than anything else they've ever done, songs are way longer, breaking 3 minutes and shit. it's just very strange. i just gotta give it a real listen and see if they can swing in this more pop than punk situation.
actionORalgebra: i think paddy was probly like "you know, i am not that angry anymore, I am pretty old, and am settling into shit. Eric, sings songs about the scene, let's feel alright for once."
actionORalgebra: theyre not little shits anymore, they are like, dudes now, so i think they feel the blink 182 pressure, of being like "we cant sing the same 2 minute punk songs, we need some musical growth"\
actionORalgebra: which is bullshit, its like a midlife crisis released on tape. I always want em to just go with what you know
mikemnp: very true. i do feel the mid-life crisis shit with them, even when we saw them in BK, i feel like they have this fear of not being the shit anymore, not being aware of what's cool, so much to the point, that you're over it.
actionORalgebra: i always kinda feel for em though, cause theyre like, musics bastards, widely liked, but everyone kinda hates em, cause theyre not like everyone else. So whenever they want to do something different, albiet to sometimes be dickheads, they are under scrutiny for it
actionORalgebra: so I cant blame em for being like, fuck it, lets write a crazy record that we like and noone else does, cause fuck em, most of them havent had our backs since day one
mikemnp: that is true. you know, if they want to be like the auteurs of pop punk, then, fuck it, that's a good thing to try to be. and i mean, really pushing the poppy side is good. it sounds good and shit. i don't know. it's a punk record and barely sounds different than any other record.
actionORalgebra: but that barely is so noticable with a band like theym
actionORalgebra: all i know is jim is gonna love it
mikemnp: i'm just glad that D4 is a band that we talk about them in terms of records and not songs, that's super hard for a band to do. everything is about the one song or two. D4 is killing it on the record front like it's 1977 and people actually give a shit about the enitre album.
actionORalgebra: its all or nothing with them, because they HAVE to realease something front to back that works, they dont write songs, they write albums
actionORalgebra: even doublewhiskeycokenoice wouldnt work if it was on like rock against bush, or even versus god
actionORalgebra: the only reson this shit is genius works is because they made a point of putting super different b-sides and shit on the same record
mikemnp: yeah. "conceptual pop punk." you know, i wish this album did have some of the harder paddy stuff like, "a floater left with pride in the corporate washroom" or "superpowers enable me to blend with machinery." or "#51 Dick Butkis". i like that poppy stuff, but i know these guys got those rough edges.
actionORalgebra: yeah i know, but its like, everyone is looking for super powers, or like their heavy jam. I think they just tried to stay away from everything theyve done, because it has been almost 6 years, and they are almost 40
actionORalgebra: whatever, well discuss further im sure, i have to help jim out hes stressing trying to get shit done to go to philly
actionORalgebra: ill see you tomorrow, right?
mikemnp: yeah. i'm putting this coversation on the blog.
actionORalgebra: i know
actionORalgebra: talk to you later bud

The Museum of Natural History is pretty dope...

I went to the museum of natural history the other day. It was pretty cool. It was mostly like the zoo, except all the animals were dead. It's like, "whoa. that fake polar bear is pretty cool in that diorama... ...God, I sure wish the Bronx Zoo was free on the weekends." So, check out some pictures.

That's a big old whale. It was in "the squid and the whale."

Some big pre-historic bear thing. Pretty tight.

Bleeding Cowboys Sighting: Racist T-Shirt Designer

Let's make it a trifecta for the day. Found this on flikr. It was designed for one of those online wacky t-shirt stores. Well, it stinks, but at least they came down on some sick bleeding cowbz.
